HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT US
Mt. Elgon Self-help Community Project welcomes contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations. Your contribution is highly valued and appreciated. You can support us in various ways.
The project has employed four staff assisted by 4 patrons, 8 club leaders and 40 community volunteers chosen by cluster committees. Volunteers are then trained and are involved in the day-today delivery of services to the children and their families. These volunteers are able to reach an ever increasing number of children with vital services that provide both psychosocial and economic support.
The organization has a small resource base that poses a big threat in trying to balance the short term and long term needs for sustainable programs. 80% of our funds come from the community and 20% from other partners and well- wishers.
The program is exploring opportunities of widening its income base, and these include among others a local fundraising drive and purchase of an automatic clay brick making machine. The brick will help us to continue providing shelter for OVC households and for sale as a way of raising local income to the organization. We need $3350.00 to purchase materials for this project.
We need to locate land and build a skills development center that will cater for trainings, retreats and skills development. This is estimated to cost $20.000.00 which includes purchase of land and setting up structures on it.
Volunteering
Mt. Elgon Self-Help Community Project values the work of both local and international volunteers who are willing to spend weeks or months to contribute towards the well being of our people.
Volunteer work:
Construction Work and Building
Mt. Elgon Project Self-Help Community Project provides shelter for OVC households in the areas where we operate. Most of the people in rural areas sleep in grass thatched houses which are in the poor conditions and the use of cow dung as cement provides ground for breading of insects like Jiggers. We build new houses, repair old, build pit latrines, bath shelters and kitchen facilities. $800 is just enough to build a simple and decent home for one family.
Community Library
Most of the people we serve are illiterate and normally do not read literature of any kind. Pupils and students only read to pass examinations. Children have limited access to reading books that expand their imagination and the inner horizon. In partnership with Marylyn Rands, Mt. Elgon Self-Help Community Project initiated a community library to reduce illiteracy levels in the community. Volunteers can help to mobilize resources for this library. We need text books, furniture and funds to run the activities of the library.
Community Projects
Personal hygiene, HIV-AIDS prevention, malaria prevention projects, parenting skills, breastfeeding, first-aid training, family planning, nutrition and much more, soil conservation, farming, business skills, small business empowerment for vulnerable families and many other depending on one’s skills and community needs.
Medical Volunteers of All Kinds
The project welcomes trained medical personnel who can offer medical services to our clients. Most of our people are poor and cannot afford to pay for medical bills. Services required include blood pressure checks, basic dental care, malaria treatment, information sharing on HIV basics including treatment information, and so on. Your medical skills might save a life in this community and we shall appreciate your service.
Sports and Games
Most children in our communities love sports and games given the values attached. We need volunteers who can spent some time training children and youth in various games with meaning and can make a wonderful impact in the lives of children and young people in communities where we operate.
Teaching Opportunities
There are many schools in this community where the student to teacher ratio is 100 to 1. Mt. Elgon Self-Help Community Project offers opportunities for you to come and assist in teaching in various schools on the subjects in line with Uganda’s curriculum.
We also work with youth who have dropped out of school to empower them with vocational skills. Volunteers can train the youth in cooking and food preparation, auto mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, small appliance repair, computer skills, specific computer program training, computer repair, cell phone repair, solar power and use of renewable energy.
