ABOUT US
Mt. Elgon Self-Help Community Project is a Non-Profit Community Organization supporting orphans and other vulnerable children in the context of their families and communities in Uganda
We work with families, faith-based and grass root initiatives to serve the orphans and vulnerable children. The project holds at its heart the well-being of children, especially those made vulnerable by effects of poverty, conflict and disease.
Our Mission is to improve the quality of life of children affected by poverty, conflict and disease by working in and with Families and Communities to enhance care and support through capacity building, research and information sharing.
We envision a community where all children have equal access to quality care and support, and to keep their hopes and aspirations unclouded.
We do not tell people what to do, but through our interactions, teachings, and experience sharing, we create the supportive and therapeutic environment in which individuals are invited to define the purpose of their existence. We inspire and motivate people to see predicaments as opportunities for creativity and view the environment through the eyes of their purpose of existence. This approach has helped to ignite hidden potentials and aided the development of alternative and preferred stories that awakens individuals’ sense self-worth, appreciation and value for life. This approach enables people to journey to the future with confidence and optimism while remaining connected to their hopes, values, skills, beliefs and ambitions that they hold precious.
Our success as individuals, families and communities in the face of adversity is influenced by our wisdom in knowing what we do, and our readiness and willingness to learn from history. We draw energies on our relationships of mutual benefit, our values and our resilience in the face of shifting realities. This idea of “Collective Intelligence” and wise responsiveness has paved the way for the rich territory of identity, collaboration, participation and learning.
We are building a system where ordinary people are brought together to paint the world in the colors that they would wish to see. We are consciously directing our energies and resources into initiatives that enable our potentials to be reached and tapping into people’s existing passion to make a difference.
Each time that we have raised our heads above the clouds (predicaments), incredible things have happened. Here are some of our accomplishments.
Provision of shelter for OVC households and general home improvement: We mobilized materials and built 39 permanent houses for the needy families in Bumbo, Bumwoni, Lwakhaka , Bubutu and Magale sub- counties reaching 512 directly.
Capacity building of child care givers through trainings: We have trained the community teachers, community leaders, caretakers, children, and staff on various aspects of life. Read more on what we do.
Community outreach programs on HIV prevention and improvement of community parenting: We conduct community outreach program monthly to sensitize the public on prevention of HIV, child care and other social issues.
Empowerment of children, youth and women through clubs: Children, youth and women have mobilized themselves into support groups and each member is involved in an income generating project. Part of the income from the project is saved with the group, and members are encouraged to borrow and expand their businesses. We support 5 women groups with 15 members each, 4 youth groups and 4 children groups with 30 members each.
Research, documentation and information dissemination: We also run the community library where all members come in and read books about culture, politics, development etc. Members of the community are also encouraged to write their books and bring them in to the community library for others to read.
Reduction of gas mileage with Gadgetman technologies: We also enaged in another business that will provide jobs for our young men and income for the community. This one helps individuals and companies owning cars, and for anyone owning gasoline powered engines. This project helps to reduce fuel consumption and dirty emissions. The fuel that one would use for a month in a car will be up to 4 times less, emissions will be much lower, and the power will go up.
Mt. Elgon Rural electrification project: We have initiated the solar, wind mills and solar cooker projects with the aim of providing an alternative source of power to our people that we are privileged to serve. Mt. Elgon Region is the most populated in Uganda, where 99.9 % of the population depends on the few existing trees for livelihood. The project will not only reduce the overdependence on the existing forests for fuel but will also build a solar energy system to bring electricity and to pump irrigation water to the villages.
