Building strong circles of support around children at risk

ABOUT MT. ELGON SELF-HELP COMMUNITY PROJECT:

Mt. Elgon Self-Help Community Project is a Non-Profit Community Organization supporting orphans and other vulnerable children in the context of their families and communities in Uganda. We are located in Manafwa District in Eastern Uganda.

We work with families, faith-based and grass root initiatives to serve the orphans and vulnerable children. The project holds at its heart the well-being of children, especially those made vulnerable by effects of poverty, conflict and disease.

Our Vision is to have a community where all children have equal access to quality care and support, and to keep their hopes and aspirations unclouded.

Our Mission is to improve the quality of life of children affected by poverty, conflict and disease by working in and with Families and Communities to enhance care and support through capacity building, research and information sharing.

Program activities are child focused, family and community oriented, a strategy designed to build strong circles of support around children at risk. Contributions are geared towards strengthening families and communities so that they are able to take good care of their own children. We create the supportive and therapeutic environment in which children and caretakers feel safe and provide them with opportunities to re-define their goals in life and the purpose for their existence.

Mt. Elgon Self-Help Community Project undertakes activities under five core programme areas, namely;

    • Provision of shelter for OVC households and general home improvement.

    • Capacity building of child care givers through trainings.

    • Community outreach programs on HIV prevention and improvement of community parenting.

    • Facilitate children and women clubs in four clusters.

    • Research, documentation and information dissemination

    The work of Mt. Elgon Self-Help Community Project was greatly influenced by the ideas of Narrative practice by Michael White, Chery White and David Denborough of Dulwich Centre and the experience acquired through my work with REPSSI. I experienced a lot of trauma in my childhood but somehow I was able to overcome. I had done a lot of work for communities in many African countries as a Regional Psychosocial support Trainer for REPSSI. I was convinced beyond doubt that my own community once mobilized can respond to trauma around them in the most beautiful and empowering ways.

Bonny and Emma from Peacecorps visited Mt. Elgon Self-Help Community Project office at Bumbo trading center. We operate around the slopes of Mt. Elgon. It takes 9 hours to climb up to the top of the mountain.
